Using All Your Talents To Earn Money At Home

Drawing upon all your skills and talents can be a great recipe for success in a home-based business.

by Alyice Edrich
I have learned over time that one doesn’t have to stick to one line of business to be good at something, or even profitable.

I believe that one should be able to incorporate any and all of one’s skills into a home business, so with that in mind, I do a little mystery shopping, loan document signing, secretarial tasks, freelance writing, and yes, even a little party planning and selling.

I started working from home because I didn’t want to be away from my babies, for eight to ten hours a day, five days a week. And, after figuring in the costs of working, I honestly did not believe making a net profit of $2 an hour was worth more than my time with my children.

Becoming a Loan Document Signer (AKA Signing Agent) is a great opportunity because one can make $50 in two hours. Basically what one does is receive loan document papers via mail carrier, then meet with the client(s) to go over the documents. The Signing Agent will briefly go over each document, point the borrower to the signature lines and notarize any documents requiring notarization.

Once the signing is complete, the signing agent returns the documents to the loan company via mail carrier and the prepaid envelope. Payment comes a month after the job is completed and you have sent in your billing. This is great because once one has her notary license and supplies, she is ready to go and can actually see a reward within a month from contacting the companies.

The Party Consultant business can be worked from home, while all the kids are playing, napping, or sleeping. Most of the time, you are filling out free classified ads, asking for link swaps, returning emails, and making cold contact calls.

The company I work with has a wonderful support system in place. Meetings are held via phone, at night, while the kids are asleep and you’re in your pajamas. There is also a wonderful web site provided by the company that offers 24/7 service, 365 days a year. The company takes the orders, handles payment, and ships the orders directly to the customers. There will be times when you may meet with a local businessmen about an upcoming event, or place flyers at laundry mats and such (which of course, you can take your kids). * The Party Biz can be built around any existing business, including other home party companies.

Mystery Shopping comes in handy during the slow days. It’s a wonderful way to get paid to do your normal shopping, eating out or car repairs. Simply put, one would sign up with a company who would then assign places to evaluate customer service. If you have ever wanted to become a private eye, or spy, this is the safe way to go.

Freelance writing is a great tool to help promote any business, as well as cash in on one’s area of expertise. For instance, I sell an e-book that teaches one to become a successful Signing Agent. I also write to promote my businesses and to recapture events that have occurred in my life, in hopes of helping another.

With the Signing Agent position, one gets a lot of calls where a babysitter is needed as soon as an hour, a day, or a week. So it would be a good idea to have an on-call sitter available or at least, a list of people one can trust. I usually tell moms to consider co-oping with another mom so that both can share this opportunity, swap sitting services free of charge, and take jobs on different days.

For instance, if someone calls and says, ‘I need someone Wednesday.’ Mom A could say, 'I'm sorry, I am booked for the day, but my partner would be more than happy to take the job, here is her number.' If there isn’t another mom around or interested in the co-op idea, this job could still be done around one’s spouses hours. For instance, Mom B could simply say, 'I’m sorry, I am booked until Wednesday, can we do it then?' Also a good thing to note here is that Signing Companies do have an independent contractor agreement to sign, in which you state the hours you are open for business.

Now let’s say that you are out on a mobile notary job, and want to share your party biz. You can leave your business card which lists both your notary and your party biz or you can leave a brochure or flyer about your party biz. And vice versa.
