Splotchy Branding

Spring is coming up in splotches here in the States. An invigorating time of year. A time to clean out the crevices and usher in new things.

Apparently, I'm ushering in rarely used words. Splotches? What is a splotch? Is it really a word?

Yep. It's a cross between a blotch and a splash.

It's the time of the year when new things pop up everywhere. Funny words included.

Moving on...

I visited a quaint little restaurant the other day. Funny name it has: Squat n' Gobble.

No kidding.

Would you trust your hunger to a neighborhood Squat n' Gobble?

Curiosity hooked me. I had an unsettling vision of Suma wrestlers squatting down for a meal, a sea of bellies draped over the floor. Like waves sloshing into shore, their stomachs gently undulated with each bite of food.

I had no choice but to check it out. If squatting was involved, I could always retreat with the excuse that I left my wallet on the beach.

Upon entering, I was relieved to see lots of people sitting on four-legged chairs. Normal people on normal chairs. No squatting. Lots of gobbling though.

There I stood, lured in by a funny name, ready to grab the first available seat and join in the gobble-fest.

Pretty sneaky, but very effective way to get me in the door. Nice place, too. Comfortable atmosphere. A splash of color here, a blotch of weaved patterns there.

Splotchy. In a good way.

So what's the lesson here?

Simple. Get a great catchy name for your business and make the inside nice and splotchy - in a good way. Position yourself with a unique hook. It's branding the splotchy way.

One last query...

Would I have lingered at the Squat n' Gobble if the tradition of this splotchy eatery was to squat while gobbling?

Probably. It's spring. Time to try new things.
